rarescale's Summer School returns in 2019 in the beautiful venue of Harlaxton Manor, just outside Grantham in Lincolnshire.


Featuring courses for flute players (including the opportunity to specialise on alto or bass flute) and composers, this promises to be an inspiring week of ensemble playing, developing new repertoire, collaborations and the opportunity to work towards individual goals in a relaxed and supportive atmosphere.

Course Tutor: Carla Rees
Carla is an experienced flute ensemble leader, performer and arranger. In this year's Summer School, flute players and composers/arrangers will work together during the week under her expert guidance.

Flute Course

This course is aimed at undergraduate level performers and above, and is suitable for students, young professionals and advanced amateur players. Minimum recommended standard ABRSM Grade 8. This year's course will focus on flute ensemble playing, including:

  • The techniques of alto and bass flute playing, as well as piccolo and C flute
  • Discussions on specific technical issues, including extended techniques
  • Develop your ensemble playing skills in groups of varying sizes
  • Explore advanced ensemble repertoire for all members of the flute family
  • Work with composers and arrangers to workshop new works for flute ensemble
  • Opportunity to perform in an informal end of course concert
  • Opportunity to try the contrabass flute
  • Learn about arranging for flute ensemble
  • Potential further opportunities for individual lessons (for an additional fee)

Flute Ensemble Composition & Arrangement Course

Suitable for undergraduate level composers/arrangers and above, this course is designed to provide composers and arrangers with hands-on experience with an advanced flute ensemble. With daily workshops and time to develop work individually, the course provides opportunities to:

  • Test and workshop ideas with an ensemble
  • Work collaboratively with performers
  • Work independently on the creation of new material
  • Have a work in progress performed in an informal concert at the end of the week
  • Work within a small group of composers for peer support
  • Develop your skills in composition, including aspects of structure, instrumentation, harmonic language etc
  • Learn about the specific techniques of writing for all members of the flute family, including extended techniques
  • Potential further opportunities for individual lessons (for an additional fee)


Please note that composers should bring a laptop running music notation software, headphones and/or any other items required for their compositional activity. A printer is available at the venue for producing parts. Places on this course are limited so early booking is advisable.

The composition & arrangement course is also open to any flute players wishing to participate as performers - please indicate this on your booking form.


Composition Retreat

The Composition Retreat offers experienced composers the opportunity to work in the wonderful surroundings of Harlaxton Manor, with support from rarescale course tutors, while maintaining the freedom to work on independent compositional projects.

  • Open to composers of all disciplines
  • Come and enjoy the wonderful surroundings of Harlaxton while working on independent compositional projects
  • Potential for the development of longer-term collaborations with rarescale and participants of the flute course


The composition retreat also offers full flexibility to attend aspects of the taught courses for flutes and composers (space permitting). Places on this course are limited so early booking is advisable.

Dates, Accommodation and Fees
Dates: Monday 29th July - Saturday 3th August 2019 (Arrive by 11am on Monday and depart on Saturday after breakfast)

Accommodation is in study bedrooms in the student-style accommodation at Harlaxton Manor. Rooms are allocated on a best available basis and course participants may be asked to share. A surcharge of £100 is payable for anyone wishing to reserve a single room, but please be aware that availability is limited and we cannot guarantee to meet all requests. All bathroom facilities are shared, and accommodation fees also include all meals. Additional accommodation may be available for the Sunday before the course starts at an additional cost – please ask. If you prefer to stay in one of the local hotels, a non-residential rate is also available.


Full Board Fees: £595 (£475 for students)
Single room £100 supplement
Non residents £400 (including lunch and dinner)
Non-refundable deposit due at time of booking: £300
The remainder of the fees are due by 30th June 2019. All fees are non-refundable after this date, except if the course is cancelled by rarescale.
